Adirondack Pub

Adirondacks

OPEN Had some of John's IPA at Saratoga's Battle of the Brews: still wickedly hoppy!

Anheuser-Busch

Big Guys

OPEN July 2008: soon to be bought by InBev

Barker Brew Co.

Great Lakes

CLOSED 6/1/05: Ellicottville West opens in the Barker building. See further news at that name.
RUMOR: 12/20/04 sees a rumor hit my e-mail: the Ellicottville Brewing folks have bought Barker, and intend to brew there. CONFIRMED: It's true, and Ellicottville will be re-opening the place in the summer.
CLOSED as of late May.
Terrible news. Joe Rogers just seemed to lose heart after a series of staff problems and a particularly hard winter, and packed it in. A hard loss for New York, a tough loss for me: I loved this place.

Big House Grill

Capital District

CLOSED The Grill's closed, and apparently will not re-open.
3/1/05 SURPRISE UPDATE: The Grill will re-open as The Firkin & Fox, a franchised member of a Canadian pub chain. No brewing, but there should be decent beer on Wolf Road again.

Big House Brewing Co.

Capital District

CLOSED 8/17/05: Big House is closing this weekend. Too damned bad, I say.

5/2/05: According a very reliable source I talked to at TAP NY, Big House is no longer focused on craft beer, and no longer brewing significantly at Brown's. A definite disappointment for the Capital District.

According to a press release dated July 13, Big House and Brown's Brewing (formerly Troy Pub) are merging brewing operations at Brown's developing Hoosick Falls facility. Drew Schmidt and Peter Martin will both be brewing. An interesting move, if they can pull it off. Big House and Troy have always gotten along, a damn near unique relationship in the Capital District.
10/04 update:
Apparently there is no longer brewing going on at Big House; all beer is being brewed at Brown's.

Black Forest Brew Haus

Long Island

OPEN 5/11/05: Pathetic, really. I mean me. I finally got Joe's replacement's name: Joe Hayes. And I had his tasty Maibock at TAP New York. Apologies for taking so long, Joe, you deserve better.

Joe Schineller has left.

Black River Brewing Company -- CLOSED

Adirondacks

CLOSED 11/8/06: Forgot to get this one up: Black River is closed, debt problems.
7/06/06: Word on BeerAdvocate is that Black River's tanks are "dorment," and they're still looking for a brewer. Oh, my.
4/28/06: The former Red Lion brewpub
has re-opened as Black River Brewing. New owner Kathy Baker has the place open for business with guest beers, and is interviewing brewers. Beer this summer?

Blue Point Brewing Co.

Long Island

OPEN

Bootleggers -- CLOSED

Adirondacks

CLOSED July 2008: dead like doornail.
11/8/06: Bootleggers is closed. It may re-open.
8/30/06:
I've had reports that Bootleggers is no longer brewing. I'm going to try to run this down.

Brewery Ommegang

Finger Lakes

OPEN, NEW OWNERS July 2008: more new beers, a landmark beer festival (Belgium Comes To Cooperstown), and a lot more promotion. Bravo!

1/7/05 update: Ommegang has established Witte as their first steady draft beer, and Hennepin should join it in late spring. There's also a one-shot Ommegeddon planned for release at the Extreme Beer Festival at the end of January in Boston.

The Moortgat brewery of Belgium, a partner in Ommegang, bought the brewery outright in early 2003. The new owners have decided to make the exceptional Three Philosophers a regular beer, and have renamed the witbier Witte.  F.X. Matt Cup, 2003

Brickhouse Brewery

Long Island

OPEN

Brooklyn Brewery

NYC

OPEN

Brotherhood Winery

Hudson Valley

HAS NOT OPENED Brotherhood's brewery has not opened, and the old Woodstock equipment is still in Kingston, doing business as Keegan Ales. I just talked to Nat Collins (9/5): the brewpub is still a possibility in a couple years, and he's also working on finding a property. So...maybe we'll have a real Nat Collins brewery in the 2nd edition!
Brown's Brewing Co. -- (formerly Troy Pub) Capital District RENAMED 8/17/05 update: Gary Brown has put the Troy brewpub and music hall up for sale to raise money to start the microbrewery in Hoosick Falls. He plans to can beer for the regional and specialty market. No clue on whether any potential buyer would continue brewing.

5/02/05 update: Problems with cashflow (due to the unexpected drop in Big House brewing) have put back the Hoosick Falls facility schedule. The pub's still doing well, Revolution Hall's doing well, the beer's still good...but expansion is on slow for now.

Was the Troy Pub, now named Brown's Brewing. This is actually the place's third name, it was originally Brown & Moran. The name's not the only thing changing: brewing operations are moving to a production facility in Hoosick Falls, expected to open in Spring of 2005. And there's more: Garrett Brown said they will be packaging beer in "draft and pint cans." But wait, there's more! Look up at Big House.

Brü Great Lakes NO LONGER BREWING -- NAME CHANGE  July 2008: the brewhouse wound up at McKenzie's in Glen Mills, PA.

10/4/05 UPDATE: It was announced today that Brü will cease brewing, and undergo a complete makeover and name change, to become a "beer bar" with an emphasis on live bands. May God have mercy on their souls.

Brü opened Jan. 27, 2004 in the former Empire Rochester space (300 State St., 585-546-3664), under the direction of Jonathan Wehle, of the Genesee Brewery Wehles. (See my interview with Wehle here.)  First brewer was Dean Jones, now at Wagner Valley. New brewer Eric Watson (out of Main Street Brewing in Evansville, IN) started early in 2005
5/5/05: I heard from Eric Watson today. The sports bar look is gone, the neons are largely gone, the games are gone except for a dartboard and one pool table. The big plasma screen is moving to the lounge, replaced behind the bar by a tap-board. "We purged the old waitstaff and management to eliminate the problems with service," says Eric, who was hired as much to make the place a brewpub as he was to brew beer. He's doing that, too: beer sales are up, and "I have yet to get to brewing the Belgian and Czech styles I am known for...but soon!"

Brunswick BBQ & Brew -- NEW, BREWING SOON  Capital District OPEN, BREWING SOON 7/30/08: Got an e-mail from Gary "Goose" Gosselin yesterday, formerly of Malt River: he's opened Brunswick BBQ & Brew in Brunswick, NY, east of Troy on Rt. 2 (3925 State Hwy 2, Brunswick, 518/279-9993). They're open but not brewing yet: he hopes to be brewing in the fall. Good to see him back at the kettle!

Buffalo Brew Pub

Great Lakes

OPEN
Butternuts Beer & Ale -- NEW Finger Lakes OPEN 3/7/06: Just saw this on BeerAdvocate. Guess I need to check it out. They're packaging, and they're out in the midst of nowhere; I camped near there once ( I usually don't include a map link, but this time I did!). Two beers so far. 4021 State Highway 51, Garrattsville, 607/263-5070. More when I get it!

C.H. Evans Brewing Co./ Albany Pump Station

Capital District

OPEN I met Neil Evans at Saratoga: real nice guy, good to talk to. Kick-ass Brown was just that, and the hefe was delicious.
Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. -- NEW Hudson Valley OPEN 6/27/06: Stopped in two weeks ago. Brewery's beautifully spare and well laid-out, and the beer's very nice. They're doing well in Westchester, which is just flipping amazing to me. Scott's doing some brett/oak stuff that has a ton of promise, should be great when it's finished. Well worth a visit.

1/6/06 update: Got an e-mail from Scott today: brewing has commenced, and there are about 120 bbls. in the fermenters, bubbling away. Pale Ale should be out in local accounts next week, followed by a golden ale and a smoked porter, "some of which will be aging in oak." I hope to visit soon; more when I do.
7/19/05: When I was at the Craft Brewers Conference here in Philly, I just happened to sit at the same table with Scott Vaccaro. We exchanged cards, and just yesterday I get an e-mail from him: he's signed a lease, and bought a 20 bbl. brewhouse. Captain Lawrence BC will be opening in early winter of '05. 99 Castleton St., Pleasantville, NY (just a short run up the Sprain Brook Parkway from NYC), 914-741-2337.

Chatham Brewing Co. -- NEW Capital District OPEN 3/1/07: Chatham Brewing has opened in little Chatham town, southeast of Albany. Not sure whether this should be Hudson Valley or Capital District, actually. Anyway, it's a production brewery with a 4.5 bbl. system, at 40 Main St. in Chatham ("behind Ralph's Pretty Good Cafe" says the e-mail, I kid you not). The three owners are Tom Crowell, Chris Ferrone, and Jake Cunningham (who all still have day jobs on Main St. as well). Their three beers -- an IPA, porter, and amber -- are on tap at Peint o Gwrw (a Welsh-theme pub (it means "pint of ale"), and don't that seem appropriate on St. David's Day?) at 36 Main St., and the Main Street Pub in nearby Philmont. A visit seems in order.

Chelsea Brewing Co.

NYC

OPEN Chelsea won the Matt Cup at TAP NY this year, congratulations!

Coopers Cave Ale Co. Ltd

Adirondacks

OPEN 5/2/05 update: Just heard from Patty Bethel that Coopers Cave was named Small Business of the Year by the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce.  Congratulations!

Cooperstown Brewing Co.

Finger Lakes

OPEN Just heard (9/1/04) that brewer Daniel Barry has left the brewery. Stan Hall is training up a new brewer with some help from the guys at Middle Ages. Shouldn't be a problem.
Roosterfish Brewing at Crooked Rooster -- NEW Finger Lakes OPEN, EXPANDING 3/8/06 update: Doug tells me he's now brewing two more beers: Firehouse Blonde Ale and "?(mysterious) Amber Ale". "That actually is the name," Doug told me, so there you are.

5/28/05: I went, I saw, I tasted: Pale Ale was a bit green, but good, Brown Ale was pretty damned good. If Thayer can do this on a stovetop with $400 worth of equipment, imagine what he can do with real steel.
5/4/05:
The 10 bbl. system has arrived, and just fit through the front windows with eight guys carrying it. Doug's cutting holes in the wooden floor to pour concrete piers to set it in right now. The Specific Mechanical brewhouse came out of Coach's in Norman, Oklahoma (which I visited last October). Doug hopes to be up and running by the end of May. He also corrected me: he has not had beer brewed at Ithaca; it's all been brewed on-site.

2/3/05 -- I dropped the ball on this one: Doug Thayer's been brewing up half-barrel batches of beer in the kitchen (using a big stockpot) of the Crooked Rooster (which is in the book as a beer joint) for almost a year now, and it's so popular he's bought a 10 bbl. system. He's brewing as Roosterfish Brewing. Stop by and check out the brewhouse progress: 303 N. Franklin St., Watkins Glen, 607/535-9797

Custom Brewcrafters

Finger Lakes

OPEN 5/24/07: Custom BrewCrafters is expanding in new digs. They're staying in Honeoye Falls, but will be moving into a custom-built facility and expanding capacity by 57%. This is largely to allow bottling. Cheers!
Jason's beers are tasting better than ever, and I understand business is good.

Davidson Brothers

Adirondacks

OPEN I met Bob Cohan (of Cohan's Porter) and he told me that the Porter might make a comeback. All right!
Defiant Brewing Co. -- OPEN Hudson Valley OPEN 9/22/06: DEFIANT OPENS TODAY.
6/27/06
: I visited recently: Neill's close to opening, aiming for mid-July. The beer, no surprise, is VERY good. Classic small brewery: long bar with tanks directly behind, taps directly from the tanks. They're -- no, make that he is, because this is a one-Neill operation -- right across from the train station in Pearl River: Dexter Plaza, 845-920-8602. Take the choo-choo, folks.
1/6/06: After hearing rumors for months, some solid info: Neill Acer is opening a small brewery and pub -- small -- in Pearl River, NY, close to the NJ border. I should have more info shortly.

Distillery

Great Lakes

OPEN, NO LONGER BREWING 11/8/06: Heard today that The Distillery is no longer brewing.

Eddie’s Brewery -- CLOSED

Great Lakes

CLOSED Eddie's has closed, but I hear rumor that someone's looking to re-open it. Anyone know anything?

Ellicottville Brewing Co.

Finger Lakes

OPEN
Ellicottville West - Fredonia -- NEW Great Lakes OPEN 7/15/06: Had dinner with my dad here after a long day of brewery touring. My food was excellent, his somewhat less so; ditto with the beers we got. Service was great, place looks good. Brewing is going on here, apparently. More details to come.
6/1/05: Ellicottville Brewing
is now open in the old Barker Brew location. Reader Doug Rector reports: "The beer is being trucked in from Ellicottville and is excellent, the food is fantastic with great presentation, wonderful flavor and huge portions. Peter (Kreinheder), the new owner, spent huge amounts of money on renovations...better than Barker was. Plans are in the works for on-site brewing in the relatively near future." Thanks, Doug!

Empire Brewing Co. Syr.

Great Lakes

OPEN July 2008: It happened, they're open. Hope to stop in sometime soon.

4/26/07: Rumors of Empire's re-opening are very strong now, and center on Tim Butler, former ass't brewer at Middle Ages, coming to the site, with former Empire owner Dave Katleski as the future owner. Cross your fingers.

11/22/05: Rumors continue and strengthen about a re-opening of Empire Syracuse, in the same space, with the same feel, and with Andy Gersten returning to brew here. We'll see.

9/23/04: The final Empire brewpub closes, owners cite "the bad economy." A real loss, Empire ran places that mainstream restaurant-goers and beer-drinkers could relate to. UPDATE! 1/12/05: Rumors are circulating about a possible buy of the brewpub by a group of former employees.

Empire Brewing Co. Roch.

Great Lakes

CLOSED 9/2: Empire is closed. What happened? See above. UPDATE! See Brü above for what's happening in the Empire space; a new brewpub! (Forget it: Brü's closed.)
Flour City Brewing Co. -- NEW...and CLOSED Great Lakes CLOSED

3/17/05: Before I even got a chance to visit, Flour City has closed. Bugger.

Up and running, with Greg Smith, formerly the brewer at Empire Rochester. Good reports so far, no visit yet. 869 E. Henrietta Rd., Rochester, (585) 424-4677

Flying Bison

Great Lakes

OPEN Flying Bison is now in the PA market. They also have a great new IPA, Bird of Prey IPA, which I featured at a tasting at the Grey Lodge in Philly  recently; the tasters really liked it.
Bison under glass!
Flying Bison purchased a small bottling line and Aviator Red is out in bottles.

Gentleman Jim's

Hudson Valley

NOT BREWING

Jim Fahey decided to take the brewery out of Gentleman Jim's. The restaurant's still open, and John Calen is now brewing at Ramapo Valley.

Gilded Otter

Hudson Valley

OPEN

Great Adirondack BC

Adirondacks

OPEN Rob Davis has left Great Adirondack. Hutch Kugeman, his able assistant and an excellent brewer in his own right, is the new brewer.
WHOOPS!
Found an error: Great Adirondack's phone number is 518/523-1629. I'll have that fixed in the next printing.

Heartland Brewery

NYC

NOT BREWING Brewing is now done at Heartland's Greenpoint brewery.

Heartland -- Midtown

NYC

NOT BREWING Brewing is now done at Heartland's Greenpoint brewery.

Heartland -- Chophouse

NYC

NOT BREWING Brewing is now done at Heartland's Greenpoint brewery.
Heartland -- Greenpoint Beerworks -- NEW NYC OPEN A big production facility (30 bbl. brewhouse, all draft packaging, no bottling line) in Brooklyn to serve the "not-so-much brewing" Heartland pubs, including a fourth pub at the site of the old North Star, in the South Street Seaport. (529 Waverly Avenue, Brooklyn)

High Falls BC

Big Guys

OPEN New beers are out under the Dundee label: reports are that they are Saranac-like in character. Hope to hear more. Whoa! I've had 'em, and they're at least Saranac-like. The Dundee Pale Bock rocks, the IPA is rippingly bitter. Expect great things in the future.

Hyde Park Brewing Co.

Hudson Valley

OPEN John Eccles is now brewing at Sky Top; his former assistant is brewing here (a guy John says "Will be better than I ever was." High praise).

Ithaca Beer Co.

Finger Lakes

OPEN 4/22/05 update: Ithaca now has a greatly expanded taproom at the brewery for real sampling. Stop by!
Apologies to brewer Jeff Conuel:
I got his name wrong in the book.

John Harvard's Brew House

Long Island

OPEN
Keegan Ales -- NEW Hudson Valley OPEN 2/9/06: Just heard from Tommy Keegan. They're starting to get beer into NYC and Long Island, and a restaurant is being added to the brewery, should be open this summer. Time for a visit!
In the old Woodstock Brewing building, it's Tommy Keegan, an experienced brewer, doing production work.  (20 St. James St., Kingston, 845/331-BREW) Update: I've tasted them, and they're good. Watch out for Hurricane Kitty, those are real hops he's using.
King Arthur's Steakhouse & Brewery -- NEW Great Lakes OPEN 4/22/05: Andy Gersten has moved on to Sackets Harbor (excellent news for them), will be replaced by former Flour City (and Empire Rochester) brewer Greg Smith. WAIT, scratch that. Just learned that Greg decided not to take the job at King Arthur's.
12/19/04 Update:
Just saw on Pubcrawler that former Empire Syracuse brewer Andy Gersten is brewing at King Arthur's.
Opened in the Buckout-Jones building (1st & Bridge Sts., Oswego, right by the river), site of a former brewery (Buckout). Strongly medieval in theming. Visited 8/12/03: not good news, I'm afraid. Very cool place, great location, but two beers were horrible, others mostly flawed, one good one. A new brewer had just been hired, I'm hoping for the best.

Lake Placid Pub & Brewery

Adirondacks

OPEN Matthew Vassar Cup, 2003, 2005; F.X. Matt trophy, 2005.

Lake Placid Craft Brewery (Plattsburgh)

Adirondacks

OPEN 4/26/07: The deal's gone down: Lake Placid Craft Brewery is now in a joint venture with Matt Brewing. Matt will be helping them to maximize production at Plattsburgh (where the emphasis will be on specialty brews) and brewing LP beer at Utica; the brewpub, as mentioned, is not part of the deal. This is a very good idea for both breweries, I think, and a good way for LP to get geared up for the booming demand they've experienced.

4/9/07: As some of you may know...the ICBS deal has fallen through. But in FDR style, a New Deal is in the offing (which also keeps the brewpub separate, by the way), one that is quite pleasing to me, personally...not that anyone involved would give a damn about that! More very soon, says my source.

9/12/06: Just heard from Chris at Lake Placid. The salient points. The brewpub in Lake Placid is a separate company and is unaffected by the ICBS deal. The deal with ICBS is not done yet. If done, it will mean an expansion of the Plattsburgh facility to an annual cap of "25-40,000 barrels a year." There will be no change in personnel at the brewery. Such an expansion will allow them to fill orders they already have and expand territory. They are currently only filling 40% of orders. Sounds like a good move for beer lovers.

8/30/06:
Lake Placid has signed a letter of intent with Canadian (Montreal) business development firm, ICBS Limited (the same outfit that just bought Ramapo Valley) to sell full ownership to ICBS. I don't know if this includes the brewpub in Lake Placid or not. The Quebeçois are making their move.

Malt River Brewing Co.

Capital District

NOT BREWING 8/30/06: Malt River has re-opened as a beer bar, same location, 26 taps and some good bottles as well.
5/16/06:
Just got the news today that Malt River closed last Wednesday, May 10. I'll miss Goose's beers. I know he'll land on his feet, but I sure hope it's in a brewery. (Rumor is that Goose is still brewing somewhere...Brown's? Update: that fell through, but Goose is trying to put together a brewpub: more when I get it.)
Goose's Red Ale was one of the very best beers at the recent Battle of the Brews festival in Saratoga, and did it without hops, fruit, or Belgian yeast. Solid, good beer.

Market Street Brewing Co.

Finger Lakes

OPEN

Matt Brewing Co.

Big Guys

OPEN July 2008: a big fire took out the canning line and stopped bottling temporarily; brewing continues, and other  brewers are helping out with packaging. Drink more Saranac!

Seasonal Hefeweizen a huge seller and great critical success; here's hoping it gets a permanent place in the lineup! (Latest from the Matt people: Hefeweizen is the new Summer seasonal, permanent-like. Good call!)

Mendocino Brewing Co.

Capital District

OPEN White Hawk IPA is brutal. Whackingly hopped with plenty of European buds, this one will make you wake up.

Middle Ages Brewing Co.

Great Lakes

OPEN Tim Butler has left, now brewing at Empire.

Tripel Crown is selling well and is one hell of a great beer.  New beer: Wailing Wench Imperial IPA. Viciously hoppy.

Original Saratoga Springs Pub and Brewery

Capital District

CLOSED

9/15: CLOSED. In what was apparently a planned move, the restaurant has closed, is removing the brewery, and will re-open with a new "theme." That'll teach 'em to win the Vassar Cup, I guess.
Saratoga Springs kicked butt at this year's (2004) TAP NY, wins the Vassar Cup: congratulations!

Pearl Street Grill & Brewery

Great Lakes

OPEN

Ramapo Valley Brewing Co.

Hudson Valley

OPEN, MOVED, NO LONGER BREWPUB 8/30/06: Just found out that Ramapo Valley was bought back in June by a Canadian (Montreal) business development firm, ICBS Limited. ICBS "is working to expand the production and distribution capabilities of Ramapo Valley Breweries...that will see production increase by five fold." Wow. (See also Lake Placid.)
12/14/04 UPDATE: Ramapo Valley has moved, and is no longer a brewpub.
New owners have taken over the restaurant (which has a new phone number -- 845-357-3942 -- and a new menu). The brewery is now "down the road," according to brewer John Calen. (Hillburn Industrial Park - 143 Rt 59, Building 6, Hillburn, NY 10931, 845-369-7827) John's gluten-free beer "is quite popular," and I'm hoping to get a sample soon. They've expanded to a 30 hl Newlands system they bought in St. Maartens; the 15 bbl. Pub system is "still in service," moved to the new site. Sounds good, and John's working on some big iron now.
John Calen (formerly of Gentleman Jim's) is the new brewer. Neill Acer is working on a new project in NYC: see West End Brewing below.

Red Lion Brewing -- CLOSED

Adirondacks

CLOSED July 2008 -- re-opening fell through. Bummer.

9/6/05: A note on BeerAdvocate today says the Watertown Daily Times reports that Red Lion will be opening in the fall with new owners as Black Water Brewing Co. More info when I get it!
3/26/04:
Red Lion has closed as of March 15. Newspaper reports say Mike Martini blamed the long deployment of the 10th Mountain Division out of Ft. Drum; beer geeks noted the long decline of the beer quality. Unfortunately, with Red Lion and Empire both defaulting on gov't-backed loans, it's going to be tougher for other brewpubs in upstate to get similar loans.

Rohrbach Brewing Co.

Great Lakes

OPEN 3/26/07:Actually, scratch that. Bruce Lish has returned to Rohrbach, and rumor is that there is a move afoot to bring the smaller 7 bbl. system back on-line for making some special beers. Welcome back, Bruce.
Bruce Lish is no longer brewing at Rohrbach.

Sackets Harbor Brewing Co.

Great Lakes

OPEN 4/22/05: Andy Gersten is now brewing at Sackets.
Saw Mill River Brewing -- CLOSED NYC CLOSED 11/8/06: Saw Mill River may have closed. The phone is disconnected, and the Yonkers CofC confirms that they are closed. 11/9: Confirmed. Saw Mill River is closed; the beer is being contract brewed at Defiant.
2/6/06: I blew this one. I caught rumor of this place when I was writing the book, but no one seemed to know if it was open or not, and I never got a call-back from several calls. Guess I should have visited. Charles Ewen and his wife, Carol, have been brewing in Yonkers since 1996. They make a pale ale and lager, and a couple seasonals, with a very small distribution area. My apologies; should have dug deeper on this one! 201C Saw Mill River Rd, Yonkers, (914) 963-4106.
Sixpoint Craft Ales -- NEW NYC OPEN 12/12/04 update: Sixpoint draft beers hit the NYC market this week. English Brown, an "English-style IPA," and an "east coast Amber."
11/4/04 UPDATE:
Brewer Shane Welch (formerly of the highly- esteemed Angelic BC in Madison, WI) and Andrew Bronstein will be opening Sixpoint Craft Ales in two weeks. Brooklyn location, 20 bbl. brewhouse, production brewery, draft-only, progressing to growlers and then perhaps to bottles, "English Ales to Belgian Abbeys to Czech Pilseners and beyond..."
Skytop Steakhouse & BC -- NEW Hudson Valley OPEN 4/22/05 update: A former steakhouse on the ridge to the west of Kingston has become a steakhouse and brew-pub under the ownership of the same folks as at Hyde Park Brewing. John Eccles is doing the brewing; his assistant has taken over the duties at Hyde Park. The place is at 237 Forrest Hills Drive, just off Rt. 28 west of Kingston, with a beautiful view. (845-340-4277)

Southampton Publick House

Long Island

OPEN Phil Markowski received the Russell Scherer Award for brewing innovation, an extremely prestigious award for American brewers, and well-deserved.
Southern Tier Brewing Co. -- NEW Finger Lakes OPEN Packaging micro just outside of Jamestown, started by former Goose Island people Phin DeMink and Matt Robbins. Brewing really good beer right from the get-go; try the IPA, the new Pilsner's good too.  2051A Stoneman Circle, Lakewood, NY 14750 716/763-5479.
3/1/05 update: brush up that address: STBC has added a pub, open only Friday (4-8) and Saturday (2-8), limited menu. There's a reason to visit, by golly.

Syracuse Suds Factory

Great Lakes

OPEN
Times Square Brewery -- CLOSED NYC CLOSED

CLOSED as of...a while ago. Sorry, guys, I dropped the ball on this one. Times Square closed some months ago, and I missed adding that info.
Times Square Brewery has re-opened...kind of. New management, new location, new brewer...same name. Different! Brewer is Tim Yarrington, formerly at Long Valley, in NJ: good brewer.  210 W. 42nd St., NY, 212/398-1234 (Interesting side note: folks at the earlier incarnation of Times Square, er, attempted to destroy the brewing equipment. They did mainly cosmetic damage, and the brewhouse soldiers on at Clay Pipe, in Maryland. You can see the drill holes.)

Troy Pub & Brewery

Capital District

OPEN 6/04: Name Change: Troy Pub is now Brown's Brewing Company. The name change is in advance of a major expansion, which will include a large new production brewery in a beautiful property near North Hoosick, NY
4/03: The music hall is now open as Revolution Hall, 600 seats of cutting edge performance space...with beer! Now that is cutting edge.

Typhoon Brewery -- NO LONGER BREWING

NYC

OPEN, NO LONGER BREWING 1/19/05 update: Typhoon is no longer brewing; the restaurant remains open.
Van Dyck -- CLOSED Capital District CLOSED Van Dyck closed March of 2007, and has not re-opened. The business is in Chapter 11, and things don't look good.

6/22/05: I am very happy to make this update: the Van Dyck jazz club has returned its brewery to service. Details on the News page. 237 Union St., Schenectady, 518/381-1111

Wagner Vineyards & BC

Finger Lakes

OPEN 5/05/05: Met Dean Jones at TAP NY, great guy, and the beer's as good as it ever was.
9/04: Andrew Cummings' replacement is Dean Jones, right out of Brü in Rochester (formerly out of Michigan). Jones is a well-regarded brewer, and should be able to fill Andrew's shoes capably.
5/04:
The bad news: Andrew Cummings is leaving Wagner Valley. The good news: he's hoping to open a brewpub in the Finger Lakes area. More as I get it. 9/24/06: just got an e-mail from Andrew. He got married, moved, and is working at Great Divide in Denver (should see him at GABF this Friday). The brewpub idea's on the back burner for now, but the future may hold a return. Cross the fingers.
7/03:
Two new beers (that I know of): Sled Dog Reserve, a bigger "triplebock" in 750 ml bottles, and IPA, a real hop-hammer that is just magnificent on cask.
West End -- NEW  NYC NOT BREWING 8/30/06: BELATED Update -- West End is no longer brewing; Neill Acer is busy with his own place, Defiant Brewing (see above). He's probably going to be selling his beers to West End once he's open.
Just opened last week of October, 2004, with brewer Neill Acer at the helm. 2911 Broadway at 113th St., 212-662-8830. Two house beers (limited brewery space).

Yankee Brewing Co., Inc.

NYC

CLOSED Time to take this entry off life support: Yankee Brewing is closed.
9/03: No answer on the brewery line, no answer from Sal, street story is that the brewery's "not brewing beer."
